Ms. Babs’ Staff

The amazing staff at Ms. Babs’ Nursery School consists of carefully screened, experienced childcare professionals. Before employment occurs, each staff member is required to participate in a daylong observation. All teachers are CPR-certified and first-aid certified for infants, children and adults. They are also required to maintain the 20+ hours of annual continuing education, including health screening, curriculum building and child development courses.

Ms. Babs Cafarella

Ms. Babs is our founder, the schools name sake and Mr. Joe’s mom! She began working with children in her early 20s and received her early education degree from Lesley College. She handles everything from helping with the curriculum, cooking yummy and healthy meals, singing songs with the children and doing continuing education classes for our staff. She is a kind, trusting, loving and caring individual that leads by example.

Mr. Joe Cafarella

“Joe-Joe” is the school’s owner and has been working with children since he was fifteen years old. He has his recording arts degree from Full Sail University and believes music and dance should be a strong part of all children’s lives. Joe is passionate about our school, creating an atmosphere for children that is unique in the way that they learn through play while being themselves. You are sure to to find him at the school making it a better place—constructing new bookshelves or new cubbies for the children—when he is not at home with his wife Jamie and their four beautiful little girls.

Ms. Carly Hanchin

Ms. Carly is our Co-Director and Cricket Lead Teacher. Prior to teaching at Ms. Babs’ in January 2012, she earned her Bachelors degree in Foreign Language from VCU and was an au pair in Paris as well as an English teacher in Sri Lanka. Carly loves that children remind you to be silly and to slow down and enjoy the moment. Some of her hobbies include exploring Richmond, trying new restaurants and taking advantage of all the small businesses Richmond has to offer. Being our Co-Director, Carly can help with any administrative information you may need.

Ms. Jessica Lindsey

Jess was the Director of Joey’s Nursery School for eight years and is now Co-Director and Infant Coordinator at Ms. Babs’. She graduated from VCU in 2010 with a degree in Sociology and Cinema. Jess finds it an inspiring and humbling experience to have the honor to spend time with these little ones and finds it FUN to see them grow and develop. She looks forward to coming to school and witnessing the sweet and cute changes that happen every day.

Ms. Samantha Saddler

Ms. Sam is our rock star Bumblebee Lead Teacher. She has brought her very bright, energetic vibe to Ms. Babs’ since September 2011—making the best out of everyday. Sam loves making crafts with the children, teaching cognitive development as well as getting them potty trained and ready for the June Bug class.

Ms. Katie Ellis

Ms. Katie started with Ms. Babs’ in December of 2012 and is a part time “Float/Assistant” teacher in our school across all of our classes. She has her Associates degree in early childhood education from J. Sergeant Reynolds, a Bachelors degree in elementary education from VCU and is currently working on her Masters in elementary education also at VCU.

Ms. Ulrika Berglund

Ms. Ulrika is our incredible chef who works closely with Ms. Babs’ to provide healthy, scrumptious meals to our children. Trained in Sweden who, working in both schools and restaurants, Ulrika has brought new and exciting recipes to the school, including stuffed potatoes, thick stews of vegetables and meat and, of course, Swedish meatballs with mashed potatoes and gravy.
